London - Parkland Walk

Done this walk in December last year. But after busy London I needed something green and the song of the birds. It was the right decision for this delightful day  :)
We start at Alexandra Palace taking the Northern Heights Parkland Walk down to Finsbury Park.

London - Strand, Fleet Street

Back in London for a week.
A friend of mine told me about the region around Fleet Street, I should take a look at the upper parts of the buildings. Fleet Street, an area where news were made, here we go :)
Bayern München played against Borussia Dortmund in Wembley, so I nearly felt as if I were back in Germany.

Lewes

T&B asked if I had been in Lewes, so I went off the train for a short look on this historical place before going further on in direction west again. I must say, I could have had a closer look, but wanted to reach Angmering in time for a ginger beer :)

Leaving Seaford

It is time to leave Seaford. I have had weather of all kinds, exposed in the marshes near the large bay and the mighty sea. I was in the midst of nature, woken up by the dawn chorus, going to bed in the early evenings, listening to the wind and rain dripping on my tent. For sure I will miss the sounds of Seaford, even the train nearby :)
Special thanks goes to T&B for their invitation to a Sunday lunch, interesting talks and their open hearts!
And to my neighbour on the campsite. The Londoner former postman with restaurant in Thailand. The fish you caught tasted fabulous! I will always think about you hearing this :)

Martello Tower, No. 74

The Martello Towers were built in order to protect England against the French. No. 74 is the last one been built. Through the centuries it has been used for several things. It has been a place for roller skating, a bathhouse, or a privat home. Now it has become a museum, run only by volunteers. Never seen soo much oddity in a museum - but very nice :) They have been collecting mostly everything which has been used in the town itself or found in it´s surroundings. Come with me for a trip into the Seafordian past :)

A walk to the Seven Sisters

I have had rain in the night, but the morning turned out to be sunny so I decided to go for a walk and watch the Seven Sisters.
On my way I took a look at Martello Tower number 74, nowadays a museum of local history, and some beach huts - can´t get enough of them!

Seaford

People have lived in this part of Sussex for thousand of years. Once the River Ouse reached the sea at the foot of the cliffs making Seaford an useful harbour.
Bronze age people built a hill-fort on the cliffs and a Roman cemetery lies under the greens of the golf course.
Seaford was first mentioned as a port 1229.
In medieval times the town was one of the busiest ports at the south coast, wool was the main export.
In the 14th century, the 100-year´s war and the Black Death put an end to Seaford´s pre-eminence. By 1357 it was mostly in ruins. The final blow to the town´s importance came in the late 16th century by which time its harbour had silted up. The tiny population survived by fishing, smuggling and plundering wrecked ships.
In 1661 the town regained some of it´s prestige when it resumed sending two men to Parliament. The system of "rotten boroughs", as they became known, fell into disrepute and ended with the Reform Act of 1832.
Seaford´s modern history dates from 1864, with the arrival of the railway. Victorian Seaford prospered as it brought visitors to the town.

Tide Mill

After Newhaven over the River Ouse, directly into the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve and along an old creek to the ruins of a tide mill.

Newhaven

The cycle route number 2 brought me downhill directly into the harbour of Newhaven - lucky me!
This post is mostly about fishing equipment, not about Newhaven. Sorry for that, can´t help it. There were some fabulous examples for english make-do-and-mend, by the way :)

Rest under the Coconut Tree :)

The yellow flowers of this bush intensily smells like coconut :)

Imposing Cliffs

Still on my way in direction east I left Brighton on Thursday. I left the main road A259 in Saltdean, and found myself on an impressive promenade underneath the cliffs.

Brighton Pt5

At least I reached Brighton again. I like this town and decided to stay for two days.

Hove - Beach huts

Boats

Worthing - Pier

Costal resorts became popular in Victorian times where piers were built to extend the promenade. Worthings pier opened on 12. April 1862. It took 9 months to build the pier and it cost 6500 Pound.

Along the coast ...

... beach huts and sea :) Another sunny day, by the way.

Emptying the dog, Pt9

The weather is truly giving me compensation for the last year of rain - it is another sunny day here in England. It hasn´t been raining since 15 days :)
We took the bicycle in direction west to the nature reserve West Beach, Littlehampton.

Filling the dog :)

Anyhow - this post is part 8 of emptying the dog.
And I promise no animals were killed or injured - this fluffy little bunny was already dead.
Feel invited to go for a walk in the woods, and watch these carpets of Bluebells on this sunny day!

Another sunny day, doggy has to take the trailer for a ride to the sea.

Emptying the dog, Pt6

Took the train from Victoria Station down to the south of England, to Angmering, I had to walk the dog :) It is spring here on the island, even if some old men told me this is the english summer. The weather is incredible, you don´t often see such a blue sky! And watch the trees, they are just getting their leaves, their branches seems to be black against the sky. Lambs, calves and dancing butterflies are around, a great time of the year.
