The embroiderers of medieval England, nuns, noblewomen, and professionals of both sexes, produced pieces that were prized throughout Europe. In the Vatican inventory of 1295, for example, the list of 113 English embroideries far outnumber those from any other source. Not all of these would have been obtained from England, for English embroiderers also worked on the Continent, as did Gregory of London, a gold embroiderer who worked in the papal household of pope Urban IV (1261-1264).
